Tohru had lost her father only when she was just a few years old. From then on she was raised by her mother. She had taken good care of her, and told her that Tohru should have a good heart. That is the most important thing Tohru always trying to keep in mind, with all the other things her mother had taught her.

Growing up she was often bullied and left out of games too, but she wouldn't tell this to her mother. She kept going alone. Around this time she had met a boy who helped her find her way back home, and she claims that that boy was her first love probably. She is keeping the hat she had gotten from him too, to remember that time.

Tohru had lost her home when her mother died in a car accident. She was supposed to be live with her grandfather, but he moved in with his daughter'a family and wanted to bring Tohru too. But when the time came that Tohru would have moved in with them, she realized she was more content in Shigure's home with the Sohmas.

Tohru is a sweet, young girl. Naive most of the time too. Yet, her shortcomings never let her stop to do what's right and she feels right in her heart. She is very kind and caring, sometimes to the point where she gives too much of herself to the point of stressing herself out. She prefers to bottle up her negative feelings and is bad at communicating when she is in need. Thankfully, she can be read easily by her close friends, and also slowly learns how to talk about her own feelings.
Most of her life inspiration comes from her mother's teachings, and she would often mention her. Because Kyoko may be dead, but her teachings live on in Tohru and her friends too.
tohru likes to take care of people and her friends too, and actually likes to do household chores. That comes from the fact that she often had to take care of their home while her mother was out working. She wanted to be a good girl and she also wanted to show her love to her mother that way.
She isn't talented, or smart, or has any special skills other than cooking, but her heart is open to all who would need it and that is a strength of its own. Even if she wouldn't realize that yet.
